GMEP Internship Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry.

This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

The Genetic Medicine Biology group within GMEP plays a key role in Genetic Medicine drug discovery for a variety of disease areas including Neurology, Immunology, and Oncology.

Under supervision of a principal research scientist in the group, the Intern will focus on developing and applying a robust platform to enhance these GT programs, particularly in streamlining workflows for biodistribution studies at the gene and protein level.

This will involve analyzing serum, CSF, and brain tissue samples from various in vivo efficacy and PK studies. Additionally, the Intern will assist in other key projects such as APTA monoclonal antibody backup and biparatopic projects.

This includes tasks like antibody characterization and tau antigen validation. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research and drug discovery in Genetic Medicine, providing a comprehensive learning experience in this innovative field.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Mastering cell culture and aseptic techniques.
  • Independently planning experiments under initial supervision.
  • Becoming proficient in various ELISA assay formats to determine antibody binding specificity.
  • Conducting DNA / RNA isolation for AAV-mediated transgene expression quantification.
  • Performing tissue homogenization for AAV-mediated protein expression measurement.
  • Developing skills in drafting study summary reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or other related field.
  • Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the Internship.
  • Expected graduation date between August 2024 - July 2025.
  • Strong communication and organization skills, especially the ability to work across multiple scientific disciplines and functions.
  • Ability to perform productively and efficiently within a dynamic work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experienced in mammalian cell culture, cell-based assays such as reporter gene-based assays, immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, and biochemical assays such as ELISA, immunoprecipitation and Western Blotting.
  • Knowledge and experience in biologics and Genetic Medicine drug discovery is a plus.
