Position Summary

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, under the direction of the Dean, provides strategic leadershipfor all administrative functions for the School/College as well as leadership support for the Dean. In this context, Academic Affairs referto: all activities involving the creation, maintenance, revision, or deletion of curriculum, courses, sequences of courses and programs ofstudy offered by or within the College; and the support of students (including undergraduate and graduate academic advising, studentperformance reviews and discipline, grade appeals, and other problem resolution).  A primary focus of this role is to work alongside theDean as a thought partner and strategic collaborator with a lens toward academic efficiency from the vantage of a senior administrator. TheAssociate dean proactively creates a strategy for developing and implementing new initiatives that address merger and transformationalsystems and structures. This position assists the Dean with academic program administration, project management (as needed), stateauthorization/compliance when necessary, and represents the Dean in his/her absence. As such, the Associate Dean is the College's seniorliaison to NU support departments, including but not limited to: Marketing, Finance, Student Services, Human Resources (HR), Office ofStrategy and Innovation and Campus Operations. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs works closely with the Department Chairs, who reportdirectly to the Dean. This position supports and advances the Dean's strategic vision and will engage all stakeholders in an effort toimprove organizational health and establish a college culture that upholds the shared values of equity, inclusion, and diversity asestablished by the Dean.

Essential Functions:

Administration:

  • As an academicadministrator, provides high level support to the Dean and assists with the development and implementation of the College's goals andstrategic plan, which cascade down from the University's strategic plan.
  • Directs administrative functions for college in accordancewith licensing body regulations, accreditation requirements, and University policies, in close coordination with Dean.
  • Analyzesexisting programs for subscription, growth, faculty ratios, course utilization, and provides data-driven recommendations fordivestment/investment. In this regard, Associate Dean liaises with Finance to determine appropriate strategic resourceallocation.
  • Work alongside Chairs/faculty to crosswalk programs with overlap to determine program delivery modality with optimalpotential for high return on investment.
  • Communicates frequently with the Dean regarding the College operation andprogress.
  • Suggest areas in need of continuous improvement with possible intervention strategies.
  • Develops and manages theStudent and Faculty Advisory Councils if applicable.
  • Promotes an academic culture of scholarship, teaching, research, service, andpractice.
  • Develops and supports positive engagement with the community, in coordination with College leadership and other keyinternal stakeholders.
  • Manages the development of periodic analyses and reports for department chairs, highlighting trends andpotential areas of concern regarding the academic populations, and manages special analyses as needed.
  • Liaises with Registrar'soffice and other functional teams on strategic program development.
  • Liaises and coordinates with Academic Affairs and complianceteam on issues related to state authorization, program disclosure and other compliance issues.
  • Liaises and coordinates withMarketing and Enrollment on College web site content and program level marketing initiatives.
  • Liaises and coordinates with otherfunctional areas (e.g., IT, Facilities, Campus Operations) to ensure smooth and efficient school operations.
  • Represents Dean and/orCollege in designated and ad hoc meetings, committees and projects.
  • Completes needed special projects and other duties as assignedby the Dean.

Leadership:

  • Directs key managers in the management of administrative and professionalstaff with specialized roles (e.g., Director of Curriculum, and Assistant Dean of Students) some of which may have their own direct reports;and is responsible for hiring and retaining staff, and their career development, engagement, and performance.
  • Advises departmentchairs, directors, and other faculty leaders as necessary and ancillary to the function of Academic Affairs.
  • Supervises staff asappropriate, ensuring they are successfully following appropriate program operations, protocol, policies, and procedures. Consults with HRas needed on employee relations issues.
  • Influences policies, processes, and systems at NU that will streamline processes andimprove outcomes.
  • Responsible for the retention of faculty and staff.

SupervisoryResponsibilities:This position supervises staff. Direct reports may include but are not limited to: specialized staffroles, some of which may have their own direct reports. 

Supervisor duties to include:

  • Screens applications,interviews candidates, and recommends individuals for hiring.
  • Trains and assigns work to new and continuingemployees.
  • Delegates tasks and provides effective direction to team members to produce substantial businessresults.
  • Independently conducts frequent performance feedback weekly, quarterly, and annually, to include annual performanceevaluations.
  • Participates in the annual performance evaluations of staff and implements improvement plans, as well as correctiveaction or progressive discipline as directed by the Dean in conjunction with HR. 
  • In conjunction with HR, determines correctiveaction or progressive discipline as needed for direct reports.

Requirements:

Education &Experience:

  • Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution aligned with School/College offeringsrequired.
  • 10+ years of management experience preferred. 
  • 5+ years of Director level or higher management experience, in anoperation, or academic environment, preferred.
  • Higher education teaching and leadership experience.
  • 5+ years of experiencesupervising professional faculty and staff including planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating daily.
  • 5+ years of experiencewith curriculum development and/or assessment.
  • 5+ years of experience in higher education preferred.

Competencies/Technical/Functional Skills:

  • Strong demonstrated leadership and management skills, with emphasis onemployee development and retention.
  • Strong demonstrated ability to strategize program and project development, organization, andmanagement.
  • Knowledge of programmatic policies and procedures including applicable accreditation requirements
  • Strongdemonstrated knowledge of academic and business workings of higher education.
  • Outstanding ability to apply quality principles ofleadership, basic human resources strategy, and strategic program planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Strong demonstrated abilityto organize and direct work efforts and manage several competing priorities.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and effectiveinstructional principles.
  • Ability to initiate new ideas, improvements, and effective operational procedures.
  • Skill indiplomacy and collaboration.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to participate as an active team memberof the team and organization and work toward a common goal. Contributes fully to the team effort and plays an integral part in the smoothrunning of teams without necessarily taking the lead.

  • Working knowledge, principles, and practices of office management/systems within a higher educationenvironment, preferred. Demonstrates an understanding of underlying organizational issues.
  • Ability to drive towards achievingmeasurable and challenging goals to support organizational success. Demonstrates the ability to focus on achieving results consistent withthe organization's objectives. As a leader, develops goals based on the organization's vision, mission, strategic goals, andobjectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individual of constituenciesin a diverse community including, but not limited to e-mail, learning platforms, chat rooms, videoconferencing and other technology-based oncommunication media.
  • Work independently and foster a cooperative spirit within a large and/or small team of diverse cultures, whileworking in a fast-paced environment with multiple deadlines and frequently changing priorities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word andother applications in the Microsoft Office Suite. Familiar with and proficient in effectively using a Student Information Systems (SIS)software platform.

Travel: Occasional travel may be required for Commencement, meetings,conferences.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary basedon a candidate's qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary withinthis range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency. Compensation Range:

Annual Salary: $112,290.00 - $151,590.00
