OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

As part of the Division of Healthier Populations, the Department of Health and Migration represents the Organization and provides global direction on the technical area of Health and Migration. Department’s work implements the Global Action Plan, promoting the health of refugees and migrants within the overall framework of WHO's Constitution, GPW13, SDG, and maximizes the Member States' Organization-wide contribution in achieving significant health status gains for refugee and migrant populations. Department also works with countries in the light of their priorities, legal frameworks, and individual circumstances, bringing together countries of origin, transit, and destination with the following five core functions:

  • Provide global leadership, high-level advocacy, and dialogue to raise awareness and political commitments and coordinate and policy development on Health and Migration.
  • Set norms and standards on Health and Migration, including co-development of guidance and tools and promoting a research agenda to generate evidence to support decision-making and global guidance for new tools and strategies on Health and Migration.
  • Monitor trends, strengthen health information systems, and develop an accountability framework and indicators for progress monitoring and reporting on the Global Action Plan implementation.
  • Provide specialized technical assistance, response, and capacity-building support to Member States, WHO technical departments, regional and country offices, and partners to address public health challenges associated with human mobility wherever needed nationally and transnationally.
  • Promote Health and Migration multilateral, inter-country, inter-regional, and global actions across United Nations systems, including the United Nations Network on Migration (UN Migration Network) and other intergovernmental and nongovernmental mechanisms.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the technical officer in the respective area, the intern is assigned the agreed terms of reference:

  • Conduct literature reviews when required to identify key research questions and methodologies and support the development of concept notes for GEHMs
  • Assist the team in development and implementation of a monitoring framework for GEHMs
  • Support the team in the liaison with external authors and publication processes for GEHMs
  • Support the development of policy briefs and organizing of launches for GEHMs
  • Organize the virtual repository of knowledge and products (publications, presentations, reportages, to be used across three level of organizations
  • Assist in organizing high-level workshops, meetings, conferences, events on high impact platforms to advance partnerships and advocacy on Health and Migration
  • Conduct research on progress on the implementation of WHO GAP and Regional policy frameworks in coordination across three levels
  • Support engagement with and Monitor implementation plans for engagements of department with external partners through established workplans (IOM, UNITE, IPU, IFRC etc.)
  • Support development of NFFs for team meetings, presentations, and other complementary documents

Learning objectives

The purpose of the WHO Internship Programme is to provide an enriching learning experience for students and recent graduates. The Learning Objectives outlined within each internship vacancy are a key component of the programme.

Within this internship, the intern will:

  • Understand the objectives of the WHO’s mandate and work on Health and Migration
  • Communicate clearly about Health and Migration
  • Know how to conduct and review literature surveys on issues concerning health of refugees and migrants
  • Develop skills in forging cases to promote health of refugees and migrants in impactful advocacy platforms
  • Prepare background documents for meetings and synergize with team work on Health and Migration

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

17 weeks - tentative start date 6 May 2024

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Have completed the equivalent of three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution in medicine or health sciences prior to commencing the assignment; AND be enrolled in a public health course of study at a university or equivalent institution leading to a formal qualification (applicants who have already graduated may also qualify for consideration provided that they apply to the internship within six months after completion of their formal qualification).

All interns should be able to demonstrate the following skills in line with the WHO core competencies:

In addition, interns need to be familiar with commonly used computer programmes, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Knowledge of specialized computer programmes, for example, statistical software such as XLStat may be an advantage.

Experience

  • Experience in research and/or in drafting reports
  • Experience in the subject area through academic work or research
  • Experience with data analysis, statistical packages and interest in the design of graphical display and analysis of health information in an international comparative perspective
  • More specific experience such as specialized computer programmes

LANGUAGES

Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of French. Intermediate knowledge of other UN language.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Interns do not receive a salary. They do however receive a living allowance. The allowance depends on the duty station and other external support (grant, scholarships, etc.) received by the intern. In Geneva, the maximum amount of the allowance provided by WHO is CHF 1680 per month. The exact amount of the living allowance will be calculated for each intern, after selection, based on a legal financial disclosure form that the individual will complete. In addition, all interns in Geneva will receive a lumpsum of CHF 20 for each working day to buy lunch at WHO campus or elsewhere. WHO also provides all interns with accident and medical insurance coverage.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Please note that internships at WHO are very competitive and only a small number of applicants will be accepted every year. Only candidates under serious consideration will be contacted.
  • Living abroad is expensive and finding accommodation can be challenging. All intern candidates should be aware of these factors before they consider applying for a WHO Internship.
  • If selected for a WHO Internship, candidates will be required to provide certified copies of proof of enrolment in an eligible course of studies, a completed WHO medical certificate of fitness for work, and the contact details for reference checks.
  • Interns are not eligible to take up a consultant or other non-staff contract in WHO for a period of three months following the end of the internship. However, no such restriction applies to temporary or longer-term staff positions if the vacancy has been advertised and a competitive process completed.

  • WHO has zero tolerance towards sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA), sexual harassment and other types of abusive conduct (i.e., discrimination, abuse of authority and harassment). A copy of the updated vaccination card must be shared with WHO medical service in the medical clearance process. Please note that certain countries require proof of specific vaccinations for entry or exit.
