Contract Duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period of six months. Internship placements shall not be extended beyond six months.

The Opportunity

The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individual charges with the gravest crimes of concerns to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression. The Court is participating in the global fight to end impunity, and through international criminal justice, the Court aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent the crimes from happening again. You can contribute to this cause by joining the ICC.

Organisational Context

The Occupational Health Unit provides Occupational Health and Welfare services for staff at The Hague HQ and for staff in the Field Offices.

The OHU’s objective is to ensure that the Organisation has effective tools for minimizing preventable staff harm, and for optimizing the occupational health conditions and working environments of the Court’s workforce.  

  • The core elements of OHU’s activities are: Organisation of health services: promotion and maintenance of workplace policies and programs that ensure the physical, mental and emotional well­being of staff, with particular focus on the prevention of work-related injuries and diseases as well as protection and promotion of the health of staff. This element of the Unit’s work includes support to Field Offices and mission travel
  • Risk management: ensuring risks are actively evaluated and managed within the ICC’s working environment. The Unit is responsible for implementing continuous improvement processes: analysing, mapping and evaluating risks to propose appropriate remedial actions to senior management fitting the needs of both staff and the organisation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Staff Counsellor/Medical Officer the intern will participate in the realisation of the following duties:

  • Update psychosocial information concerning wellbeing and health;
  • Conduct data searches on relevant topics; Especially the Secondary Trauma Survey project.
  • Handle data in Excel and in SPSS(statistics programme);
  • Assist Staff Counsellor in conducting awareness presentations and training on relevant topics;
  • Support with the inventory of medical supplies and restocking of travel medical kits.
  • Update and maintain electronic staff medical files after pre-employment medical examinations, vaccination inoculations etc
  • Under delegated authority assist with medical administration (filing and digitalising documents, preparing forms for signature etc.)
  • Any other ad-hoc duties as requested by the unit.

Required Qualifications

Education:

All Candidates must be in the final stages of their studies at a recognised university. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance. Completed three years of university studies, BA, in one of the following areas: psychology, social sciences, or medicine.

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court may be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively).
  • Has acquired a good standard of computer skills and statistical analysis (including Microsoft Office applications).
  • Good skills in Microsoft standard applications, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • Some knowledge of psycho-social issues;
  • Continuous commitment to learning;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
  • Ability to write in a clear and concise manner and to communicate politely and effectively;
  • Some previous working experience, especially having worked with people, is an asset;
  • Personal integrity.

Knowledge of Languages:

English and French are the official working languages of the Court. For this internship, fluency in English is essential. Working knowledge of French and/or Dutch would be an asset.

Remuneration

Please note that internship and visiting professional placements at the ICC are unfunded. The ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with any remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for expenses incurred prior, during or after the internship or visiting professional placement. Applicants must therefore be able to support themselves for the entire duration of their internship or visiting professional placement.
