SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES GHANA is a child welfare organization that provides a stable Family-Like Care (FLC) for children in need. We also provide social services for families at risk through our Family Strengthening Projects. Currently, we operate in four locations; Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi and Tamale with the National Office in Accra. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and dynamic persons for appointment as:

LIVELIHOOD OFFICER (AGRICULTURE)

The Livelihood Officer (Agriculture) will play a crucial role in the implementation of the PUNBO project (Pukparilim Nyela Bom'ma Project) in the Northern Region of Ghana. This comprehensive initiative aims to enhance income and employment opportunities for small household farmers through the adoption of smart agriculture practices, with a focus on sustainable agricultural production. The Agriculture Project Officer will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the agriculture component of the project.

Responsibilities:

  1. Agricultural Planning and Implementation

Develop detailed plans for the agriculture component, outlining activities, timelines, and resource requirements.

Coordinate the implementation of smart agriculture practices, including the use of improved seeds, fertilizers, and sustainable farming techniques.

  1. Training and Capacity Building

 Design and conduct training sessions for smallholder farmers on the benefits of improved seeds, fertilizers, and proper application techniques.

Collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture and other partners to ensure a consistent supply of high-quality inputs.

     3. Demonstration Farms

Establish and manage demonstration farms to showcase the benefits of adopting improved inputs compared to traditional methods.

Organize field visits and practical sessions for farmers to witness and learn from successful practices.

    4. Financial Accessibility

 Explore financial support mechanisms, such as grants, microfinance, or credit facilities, to enhance the affordability of improved seeds and fertilizers for smallholder farmers.

Engage in negotiations for bulk purchases to make inputs more economically accessible.

  1. Market Access and Diversification

Develop or strengthen market information systems to keep farmers updated on market trends, demand, and pricing.

Encourage farmers to explore diverse markets, including local markets, community-supported agriculture, and direct-to-consumer models.

  1. Irrigation and Climate-Smart Practices

Focus on developing and enhancing irrigation facilities, including small-scale irrigation systems and rainwater harvesting.

Promote climate-smart agricultural practices to address challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns and climate change.

  1. Monitoring and Evaluation

Implement a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess the impact of agriculture-related activities.

Collect data on crop and livestock production, market access, and income generation.

  1. Collaboration and Partnerships

Establish and maintain partnerships with extension officers and other relevant entities to support farmers in the correct application of inputs.

Collaborate with the project team to ensure seamless integration of agriculture activities with other project components.

Qualifications:

  1. A bachelor's degree in agriculture, agronomy, or a related field. A master's degree is an advantage.
  2. Proven experience in implementing agricultural projects, with a focus on sustainable practices and smallholder farmer empowerment.
  3. Knowledge of smart agriculture practices, improved seeds, and fertilizers.
  4. Familiarity with the agricultural sector and challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Ghana.
  5. Strong communication and training facilitation skills.
  6. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  7. Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages in the Northern Region is an advantage.
