Job Description

Manager of Philanthropy

Contract: Permanent, Full Time

Place of Work: Canada, 100% Remote

At WaterAid Canada, we support and enjoy a remote working environment. Preferably candidate should be based in Ottawa or Toronto, with consideration given to Western Canada candidates.

Salary: $70,000 - $75,000 CAD with excellent benefits)

About the Team:

To fuel WaterAid's global mission and programs, the Philanthropy Team drives WaterAid Canada's efforts to increase impact through innovative, high-value partnerships with a diverse set of private, large family and corporate foundations, government, and HNWI individual donors.

As a member of the Philanthropy Team, the Manager of Philanthropy creates impact by raising income from high-net-worth individuals and foundations by identifying, cultivating, and securing gifts of $5,000+ and maximizing relationships that add value to WaterAid's mission and strategy.

About the Role:

  • Research and identify potential funding opportunities aligned with WaterAid Canada's mission and goals.
  • Cultivate, manage, and maximize existing relationships to align donors' and philanthropic goals and broaden their philanthropic support.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with foundation representatives, grant-making entities, and HNWI's.
  • Lead the development of grant proposals, ensuring alignment with the organization's strategic priorities.
  • Develop and manage a pipeline of potential high value relationships, annual and multi-year opportunities with a goal of $500,000 in revenue.
  • Ensure there is active moves management and sufficient lead generation to deliver against planned growth and income.
  • Engage in and ensure that opportunities conform to WaterAid's Ethical Policy.
  • Using Raiser's Edge / NXT, keep clear, accurate and timely records on our fundraising database of all prospecting and partnership conversations and use it to inform prospecting plans.
  • Maintain strong relationships across the WaterAid International Federation; support WaterAid International to maximize global fundraising initiatives; represent and advocate for WaterAid Canada priorities within global fundraising working groups.
  • Develop and deliver tailored and compelling proposals that keep WaterAid's donor prospect journey outstanding and relevant.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within WaterAid Canada, such as with Communications and Brand, International Programs, Finance, Advocacy and Policy, Annual Campaign lead, and Database.
  • Utilize data-driven insights to adjust strategies for optimal performance.

About You:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience generating and closing donations of 4-6 figure gifts.
  • Proven experience in managing diverse portfolios and achieving fundraising targets.
  • Strong leadership, portfolio management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Donor-focused lens throughout fundraising cycle.
  • An understanding of the Canadian foundation sector.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to listen and engage with authenticity, as well as the ability to distil strategic or programmatic information to new audiences.
  • Confidence and ability to network and represent WaterAid.
  • Knowledge of the international development sector an asset.
  • Proven track record of building and managing meaningful relationships with foundations and HNWI's.
  • Collaborative working style to create innovative and strategic propositions and work positively in a team environment, towards shared goals.
  • Proven ability to exercise discretion and sound judgement to maintain confidentiality; commitment to upholding honest & ethical practices to ensure the safeguarding of people and organizational assets.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel) as well as a CRM (Raisers Edge / NXT);
  • Ability to travel domestically and potential for rare international travel.
  • Flexibility to work across time zones, with varied work hours, and maintain a healthy work/ life balance with supports in place.
