Result of Service

Duties and Responsibilities
About UN-HabitatThe United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat is playing a key role implementing the Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals adopted in September 2015 as well as the New Urban Agenda adopted in Quito, Ecuador in October 2016.Urban Practices BranchThe Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the thematic department at UN-Habitat with a mandate to support national and local government in urban planning, design and management related areas of work, such as national urban policies, metropolitan planning, strategic and detailed planning, urban-rural linkages, urban regeneration, public space, urban planning and innovation and urban planning and climate Change.Planning, Finance and Economy SectionThe Planning, Finance and Economy Section (PFES) is responsible for coordinating the Agency's substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance and economy. The Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels in support of (a) urban and territorial planning at all scales including urban design and public space design; (b) urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance); and (c) local economic development.The consultant will directly report to the PFES, Programme Management Officer and Coordinator of the Urban Lab Mexico.Duties and Responsibilities1. Develop participatory workshops, training, and information materials related to ‘Our City Plans’. This could include capacity building to partnering cities on the implementation of Our City Plans on developing plans, guiding participatory urban planning processes, etc.2. Provide technical support within the ISCB Project in Vietnam, producing spatial analysis, pilot projects advisory, policy recommendations and reports.3. Provide planning and design inputs to ongoing planning initiatives, including citywide strategies, extension plans and urban transformation plans. This specifically refers to the Greater Abidjan and Vietnam Cities for which expert urban planning knowledge is required.4. Develop clear project proposals related to West Africa including an urban planning and design component.5. Provide inputs to guide or facilitate the delivery of relevant urban legislation reviews and financial mechanism in view of support for plan implementation and planning processes.6. Take part in field missions as required.7. Develop and organize participatory, multi-stakeholder processes tailor made for the projects in a specific context.8. Develop the ROAF and PFES portfolio and joint project implementation, by focusing on the preparatory phase for implementing the 14M USD Adaptation Fund project approved for Ivory Coast and Ghana
Qualifications/special skills
Academic Qualification: Minimum advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban Planning, or related field that is relevant for sustainable urban development is required. A first- level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.Work Experience: Demonstrate at least 2 years of professional experience in the development of urban planning projects and urban regeneration initiatives, in collaboration with multidisciplinary work teams is required.Knowledge of the 2030 Agenda, the New Urban Agenda, and/or UN-Habitat language is desirable.International experience in the field of international cooperation for territorial and urban development is desirable.Work experience in the UN System is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Although not a requirement, knowledge of French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, or Russian will be an advantage.
