Mission and objectives

As a designated representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan, the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Afghanistan guides the UN’s engagement in humanitarian and development activities in the country.The UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator’s responsibilities include ensuring the coordination of the UN’s humanitarian action and development activities, creating a platform of coordinated delivery, promoting the enhancement of national capacities, and ensuring effective advocacy of UN values, standards, principles and activities on behalf of the UN with the highest level of Government.

Context

The 2023 Annual Results Report for the UN in Afghanistan will be developed to capture the progress and achievement of the UN Strategic Framework for Afghanistan (UNSFA) in July-December 2023. The report is expected to showcase how the UN is turning the collective promise to leave no one behind into tangible actions and results for the people of Afghanistan. The report shall focus on system-wide results.The Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Afghanistan is seeking to collaborate with Online Volunteers with expertise in report writing for development programme, communication and graphic design, to support the drafting of the 2023 UN Results Report for Afghanistan based on the inputs received from the RCO, UNINFO data and other information received from the UN Agencies operating in Afghanistan.The Online Volunteers will work on the tasks closely with a focal point from the RCO and be provided with relevant reading materials to facilitate the task such as:- The UN guidelines for UN Country Reports which include the template and structure of the report to be written.- Data and information collected from UN Agencies and uploaded to UNINFO.- Agency-specific situation reports of their work undertaken July-Dec 2023.The Online Volunteers specific tasks are:- The UN Country Results Report is prepared in accordance with the corporate template, including report cover as well as relevant annexes.- Edit, copyedit, and proofread draft inputs from agencies for consistent language and a holistic report telling a unified story. Flag issues requiring further elaboration and or clarification by the relevant team.- In collaboration with the RCO focal point, draft relevant report components as required from input and information provided.- Draft concise human-interest stories based on already produced articles by agencies throughout the year.- Ensure correctness of report language (i.e. use of grammatically correct language, spelling among others), tone and style, adhering to the UN Country Report guidelines and results language.- Work with the RCO team to revise the report following amendments and clarification and to respond to feedback from the Resident Coordinator's Office following review, as necessary.- Submit a finalized report to the office within the indicated timeline.

Task description

We are looking for Online Volunteers who under the guidance of the Head of the Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) in Afghanistan, and in close collaboration with the drafting team, support the RCO to prepare the United Nations Country Team 2023 Annual Results Report for publication.The Volunteers will be contributing to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs by helping the UN Country Team articulate a coherent, cross-pillar strategy for addressing the humanitarian, development, and peace crises in Afghanistan.In particular, each Online Volunteers will be assigned with one of the following tasks/deliverables based on their area of expertise:1) Draft the Annual Results Report together with the RCOTimeline: 6 weeks2) Design including production of charts and other visuals as well as selection of photos and appropriate copy right mentions• Layout, columns, pagination, and other design elements.• Propose chapter, heading, sub-heading, and sub-sub-heading formats.• Work with RCO to identify appropriate photographs to illustrate the report.• Refine existing graphics for publication, if necessary.Timeline: 2 weeks3) Copy editing and proof-reading• Correct grammar, spelling and syntax, and edit to house style.• Check references and bibliographies for omissions and inconsistencies of style.• Bring any suspected errors or duplications to RCO’s attention.• Checking for consistency, clarity and style in the text, as well as for any typesetting errors.Timeline: 1 weekReview and Approval:Deliverables shall be reviewed by the RCO team and UN Agencies Focal PointsOther publication-related steps will be undertaken in discussion with the RCO, if needed. At the end of the assignment, the volunteer will provide the RCO with a high-resolution, publication-quality word (or other editable file format) and pdf file.The design/layout should follow our corporate design guidelines which will be shared with the Online Volunteers in advance.The Online Volunteers will be properly acknowledged for their contribution in the preparation and drafting of the report.
