Agroforestry Technician Senior Assistant
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) seeks a highly motivated and experienced Agroforestry Technician Senior Assistant to play a crucial role in empowering women and youth in El Salvador to adopt and implement climate-resilient agricultural practices through agroforestry.
Reporting directly to the Forestry Senior Associate, the Agroforestry Technician Senior Assistant will be responsible for the project's execution and implementation of field activities alongside the beneficiaries. This will involve establishing agroforestry and silvopastoral systems in beneficiary production units, while also providing technical advice and monitoring the development of crops or enterprises established with project support. The primary focus will be on locations within San Miguel, Usulután, and Chalatenango.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to identify potential beneficiary groups of organized producers, conducting field assessments to identify suitable land for agroforestry interventions and recommending appropriate species and cropping combination, contributing to develop and delivery training modules on agroforestry practices for women and youth farmers, covering topics such as site selection, seedling selection and propagation, planting techniques, maintenance, and harvesting, and providing ongoing technical support and guidance to farmers throughout the project cycle, addressing their specific needs and challenges, among others.
ENGAGEMENT
- Collaborate effectively with GGGI colleagues across El Salvador, the LAC Regional Office, and Headquarters on project-related matters.
- Assist the Forestry Senior Associate in guaranteeing the timely execution of field operations, directly linked to achieving project results and outputs.
- Liaise with key stakeholders, including central government institutions (MAG, CENTA, ISTA, MARN), local governments, NGOs, and other local development partners.
- Leverage technical knowledge and skills to assist identification of opportunities within the project's focus area for mobilizing resources.
DELIVERY
- Support field assessments to identify suitable land for agroforestry interventions, recommending appropriate species and cropping combinations.
- Support in developing and delivering training modules on agroforestry practices for women and youth farmers, covering crucial topics like site selection, seedling selection/propagation, planting techniques, maintenance, and harvesting.
- Provide continuous technical support and guidance to farmers throughout the project cycle, addressing their specific needs and challenges.
- Contribute to developing monitoring and evaluation (M&E) indicators to track the progress and impact of agroforestry interventions on climate resilience, productivity, and livelihoods.
- Collect and analyze data on agroforestry establishment, growth, yield, and the socio-economic benefits for women and youth participants.
- Assist regular reports preparation on the implementation and progress of agroforestry activities.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of capacity building programs for extension agents and local trainers on agroforestry practices and CSA principles.
- Support the establishment of farmer networks and knowledge-sharing platforms to promote long-term sustainability and adoption of agroforestry Contribute to develop bankable business models that support project goals.
- Identify potential risks and propose solutions to Sr. Associate and Project manager address or minimize them.
- Maintain up-to-date records of beneficiaries and the physical and financial details of incentive delivery.
- Value chain promotion: Identify opportunities within the project's territory for promoting and developing value chains that will be strengthened by the project.
- Support the dissemination of knowledge and communication products developed during project execution.
- Support capacity building in farmers on utilizing ICT tools to improve access to market information and early warning systems for climate change adaptation and informed decision-making.
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Forestry, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Preferred minimum 2 years of demonstrable experience supporting the implementation of climate change adaptation technologies.
- Proven experience in providing technical assistance and training to farmers on sustainable agricultural practices.
- Experience in designing, establishing, and managing diverse agroforestry systems (highly desirable).
- Experience working with vulnerable communities, women, and youth groups (strong asset).
- Possesses in-depth knowledge of agroforestry principles, practices, and their contributions to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
- Demonstrated experience in establishing and managing agroforestry and silvopastoral systems.
- Familiarity with both conventional and agro-ecological agricultural approaches.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Excellent report writing skills.
- Fluency in Spanish and working knowledge of English.
- Must be a citizen of El Salvador or possess a valid work permit in El Salvador.
- Ability to temporarily relocate and/or work in the designated duty station.
- Residence in the Eastern Region of El Salvador is preferred.

CONTEXT
There is urgent need for identifying, demonstrating, and disseminating sustainable agricultural systems that enhance productive potential and address the interconnected drivers of poverty and climate vulnerability in El Salvador. Opportunities to address this situation include dissemination of best practices and technical capacity building in Climate Smart Agricultural (CSA), strengthening value chain integration, availing, and training on the use of and capacity building for the use of IT technologies with application in the agriculture sector.
GGGI is the implementing partner of the project "Strengthening Capacities of Women and Youth for the Implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) in El Salvador",which is financed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of the Republic of Korea. GGGI also has a portfolio of climate change mitigation and adaptation projects to support our member governments and partners in the region. The project aims to strengthening the technical and entrepreneurial capacities and provide financial support to vulnerable farmers under associative arrangements to improve sustainability of farming practices and value chain integration that contribute to the climate adaptation and resilience goals of El Salvador and net-zero goals of Republic of Korea (ROK).
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Agroforestry Technician Senior Assistant is an X5 grade on the GGGI’s El Salvador salary scale in El Salvador. Base salary is determined based on the candidate's experience, academic background, and internal equity. GGGI provides 15% of base salary for a retirement plan/long-term savings plan, 27 days of annual leave, and private medical insurance with dental and vision coverage.
