UNDP provides policy and technical advisory support to the Government of Malaysia in accordance with the Country Programme Document (2022-2025) and its attendant Country Programme Action Plan approved by the Malaysian Cabinet. The current Country Programme Action Plan (2016-2020, Suppl. 2022-2023) is aligned to the development priorities of the 12th Malaysia Plan with sustainable human development agenda at the forefront, underpinned by three priority areas: (a) inclusive development and growth; (b) sustainable and resilient development; and (c) governance.
Currently, UNDP Malaysia Country Office is supporting the design and implementation of a portfolio of sustainable and resilient development projects in Malaysia focusing on poverty reduction, nature and climate positive, sustainable supply chain, and governance to support the implementation of the Country Programme Document (CPD) 2022 – 2025. Therefore, research to strengthening visibility and positioning of UNDP’s thought leadership in Malaysia is important to foster partnership with key actors in government and non-governmental sectors.
In particular, UNDP is implementing a Sustainable Tourism project to address the impacts of COVID pandemic on the domestic tourism sector in particular, micro-, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) businesses, and community-based enterprises. The project has three key project sites in Setiu, Terengganu, Mersing, Johor and Manjung, Perak, aims to complement existing government-led initiatives by focusing on building the resilience of community and MSME businesses through interventions in 2 focus areas:
• Increased resilience and risk management of micro, small and medium-enterprises & tour operators; and
• A sustainable and responsible ecotourism framework has been formulated and piloted at the community level.
In this context, UNDP Malaysia would like to engage a Coordination Associate to manage and support project coordination, knowledge management, and documentation to ensure greater synergies and impact monitoring of the country office work. The position comprises two key work packages i.e., 1. Project Management Support to the Sustainable Tourism Project; 2. Coordination support for the front-office of the Resident Representative for project impact communication
In fulfilment of his/her role, the Coordination Associate will report to the Management Oversight Lead to support in project impact monitoring. The person is also expected to collaborate with the Sustainable Tourism Project Team to provide project management support.
Working with the Management and Oversight Unit and the RR Front Office, the Coordination Associate will support coordination of the needs of the RR in his official engagement with UNDP partners and formal speaking engagement. In addition, he/she will assist in the year-end corporate reporting process and support the Country Office’s projects in visibility, as well as documentation and knowledge management. The Coordination Associate is also expected to observe and participate in UNDP activities, meetings, and events to develop a first-hand understanding of UNDP’s programmes in supporting sustainable development in Malaysia.
Under the overall supervision of the Management Oversight Lead, the Coordination Associate will:
Project Management Support in Sustainable Tourism Project
- Support in project coordination and reporting requirements the Sustainable Tourism Project;
- Develop selected project impact stories to position CO’s work in the area of poverty reduction, environment sustainability, SDG Finance and Governance;
- Provide support to the evaluations of the country office programme and projects;
- Coordinate with programme colleagues to maintain and upkeep of the CO knowledge management portal on UNDP Sharepoint;
Support to the RR Front-office in terms of project impact and communication
- Support the RR in the preparation and coordination with project team for the preparation of briefing notes and materials about CO project success;
- Coordination and logistical support for in-country mission by senior UNDP officials to Malaysia;
- Work with programme team to support the RR on programme-level engagement with existing partners to deepen strategic partnership;
- Undertake research and literature review for the development of the existing and new projects to support thought leadership and visibility on UNDP social media.
The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.
Institutional Arrangement
The Coordination Associate reports to the Management & Oversight Lead and works in collaboration with the Programme and Operations teams in the CO. The person is also expected to liaise with UNDP regional office and government officials and other stakeholders to exchange information and ensure consistent service delivery for applicable.

Minimum Education:
- Secondary education is required.
- A university degree (Bachelor´s degree) in International Relations, Political Science, Economics or a related social sciences field will be given due consideration, but it is not a requirement.
- Minimum 6 years with secondary education or 3 years with (Bachelor’s degree) of progressively responsible experience is required.
Required Skills:
- Knowledge/experience in collection and synthesis of data and preparation of reports;
- Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.) and knowledge of spreadsheet and database packages; experience in handling of web-based management systems
Desired skills in addition to the competencies covered in the Competencies section:
- Familiarity with the development issues/context in Malaysia;
- Working experience with UNDP is an advantage
- Experience in research-related field would be an added advantage;
Required Language(s)
- Proficiency in English; Bahasa Malaysia is required.
