Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Population Unit of the Statistical Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) based in Geneva. The intern reports to the Chief of the Population Unit.The Population Unit is promoting policy dialogue among UNECE member States on various facets of demographic change. The Unit is serving as the Secretariat to the UNECE Standing Working Group on Ageing, an intergovernmental body, and is contributing towards better-informed policymaking. UNECE covers a region that spreads from North America over Western and Central Europe to Eastern Europe and Central Asia (56 member States).The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the Population Unit as follows:a) Assist in activities related to the implementation and monitoring of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and its Regional Implementation Strategy (MIPAA/RIS), as well as of the 2022 Rome Ministerial Declaration on Ageing.b) Contribute to the organisation of intergovernmental meetings and other events convened by UNECE.c) Participate in the implementation of different components of the Programme of Work of the UNECE Standing Working Group on Ageing, including researching reference materials for policy briefs on ageing and assisting in the preparation of material for capacity development on ageing-related policies and programmes.d) Contribute to communication activities (press articles, website content, social media) related to the work of the Unit, identifying topics of interest and occasions for communication.e) Contribute to the dissemination activities of the Generations and Gender Programme (a data collection programme) through maintenance and further development of the online bibliography of publications based on Generations and Gender Programme data.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).For this internship, studies in either Demography, Statistics, Economics, Social and Political Sciences, International Relations, or related fields are desirable.Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
