Position Summary

The College of Law & Professional Studies is seeking a Part-Time Assistant Professor in the followingareas of Law specialization(s): Director of Student and Bar Success.

This position will function both as a Director of Student andBar Success and as a Part-time faculty member and will function as a valuable member of the School of Law team. 

As a Director ofStudent and Bar Success, the successful candidate will work with students throughout their time at JFK, both individually and via workshops,focused on helping them develop the skills essential to succeed in law school (ex: IRAC, rule synthesis, exam skills, time managementskills, etc.). They will also work with the School of Law in the development of a CA Bar Success Program focused on preparing students tosuccessfully pass the CA bar exam from their first day as JD students through graduation and then later as alumni working toward passing theCA bar exam.  The successful candidate will work with both current students and alumni.

The successful candidate will also teach someof the bar preparation classes which could include our MBE classes and/or Advanced Legal Writing.  As a part-time faculty member, theprimary responsibility is to engage students, teach doctrine and black-letter law, conduct weekly synchronous sessions, offer excellentfeedback, and inspire students to achieve course and program outcomes relevant to the core discipline. This position works closely withother faculty teaching in the discipline, Associate Dean, and Dean and will also attend weekly School of Law Staff Meetings during normalworking hours.

Essential Functions

The role of Part-time Assistant Professor includes teaching courses within aprogrammatic core discipline as assigned, acting as a Dissertation Chair and/or acting as a Dissertation Committee Member.  

Measuring Performance

Specific performance standards for teaching include, but are not limited to:

  • Part-time Assistant Professor will email/record and post a welcome letter to their assigned students one week prior to the start ofcourse, when feasible, but always within the first week of the course.
  • Part-time Assistant Professor will record and post a videointroduction which will be placed in each course.
  • Part-time Assistant Professor will answer all student emails within two calendardays which is likely to require responding over weekends.  The exception to this requirement is if the Part-time Assistant Professor is onPTO or when there is a holiday observed by the University.
  • Communication with students will take place within the Universitylearning management system (LMS), University-designated systems and through University assigned email.
  • Part-time Assistant Professorwill contact Student Services (by use of designated means) in the LMS as soon as Part-time Assistant Professor determines a student is notactively participating in the course.
  • Part-time Assistant Professor will contact a student by email and a phone call to encouragere-engagement in the course as soon as Part-time Assistant Professor determines a student is not actively participating in thecourse.
  • As technologically supported by the platform, Part-time Assistant Professor will host no less than two one-hour synchronousoffice hour sessions per week.  Office hours will be posted in each course.
  • Part-time Assistant Professor will provide qualityfeedback to students.  Quality feedback includes but is not limited to:
    • substantive and reflect a content focus
    • impartknowledge, share resources and dialogue with students
    • include track changes of edits to proper use of mechanics
    • include asummative statement at the beginning or end of document with key observations
    • communicate in a manner and with language reflectingsupport of the student
  • If Part-time Assistant Professor fulfills all or a portion of their load serving as a DissertationChair or Dissertation Committee Member, Part-time Assistant Professor will:
    • complete NU Doctoral Student Experience Training (andother training as required).
    • follow dissertation guidelines
    • adhere to timelines required of chairs and committeemembers
    • be available to students and fellow committee members for synchronous meetings when needed

Scholarship

Part-time Assistant Professor is expected to meet the University's requirements for scholarship asarticulated in the Faculty Handbook. Part-time Assistant Professor is encouraged to apply for the various initiatives the University fundsto promote research and scholarship. Part-time Assistant Professor will:

  • Maintain a record of scholarly activities befitting adoctoral granting institution
  • Contribute to the body of knowledge of their discipline

Compliance with UniversityPolicies 

Part-time Assistant Professors are expected to know, acknowledge, and comply with University policies as stated inthe Team Member Handbook and Faculty Handbook.

Requirements:

Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:

  • JurisDoctor degree in law or a related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience in legal doctrine and practice, as wellas in teaching legal courses
  • Experience and familiarity with the CA Bar Exam, the requirements of the California Committee of BarExaminers and familiarity with the possible upcoming changes to the CA Bar Exam
  • Experience teaching JD success skills includingIRAC, rule synthesis, MBE skills, study skills and time management skills
  • Experience with the online delivery of education and thesystems that support it
  • Proficiency in the use of technology in the delivery of education
  • All skills, abilities andeducation will be considered for minimum qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experiencedeveloping CA Bar exam success program for JD students with proven track record of success
  • Online teachingexperience
  • Curriculum development experience

  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook. Experience using Student Information System (SIS) such as SOAR/Peoplesoft systems.
  • Skill in operating equipment, such as personalcomputer, fax, copier, phone systems.
  • Ability to handle a diversity of details in order to make informed and responsive decisions onmatters that impact the Part-time Professors, and students.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professionaljournals, technical procedures, and governing body regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and proceduremanuals.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret anextensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concretevariables.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with the online delivery of education and the systemsthat support it
  • Willingness to participate in trial use of new technologies and integrate new technologies intoteaching.
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and written.
  • Skill in using or eagerness to learn to use multipletechnologies to teach and communicate with students (learning management systems, Skype, etc.).
  • Demonstrated mastery of APAstyle.

Compensation Range:

Hourly: $34.03 - $44.35

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on acandidate's qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within thisrange for this position.
