Position Summary

The College of Law & Professional Studies is seeking a Part-Time Assistant Professor in the followingareas of Law specialization(s): Juris Doctor and Course Development.

Part-time faculty members teach courses within a programmaticcore discipline as assigned. The additional responsibility of this position will be course development within a particular substantive areaof the law which will engage students, teach doctrine and black-letter law, include weekly synchronous sessions and inspire students toachieve course and program outcomes relevant to the core discipline. This position works closely with other faculty teaching in thediscipline, Associate Dean, and Dean.

Essential Functions

The role of Part-time Assistant Professor includesdeveloping and teaching courses within a programmatic core discipline as assigned.

Measuring Performance

Specific performance standards for teaching include, but are not limited to:

  • Part-time Assistant Professor will create anddevelop substantive course content
  • Part-time Assistant Professor email/record and post a welcome letter to their assigned studentsone week prior to the start of course, when feasible, but always within the first week of the course.
  • Part-time Assistant Professorwill record and post a video introduction which will be placed in each course.
  • Part-time Assistant Professor will answer all studentemails within two calendar days which is likely to require responding over weekends.  The exception to this requirement is if the Part-timeAssistant Professor is on PTO or when there is a holiday observed by the University.
  • Communication with students will take placewithin the University learning management system (LMS), University-designated systems and through University assignedemail.
  • Part-time Assistant Professor will contact Student Services (by use of designated means) in the LMS as soon as Part-timeAssistant Professor determines a student is not actively participating in the course.
  • Part-time Assistant Professor will contact astudent by email and a phone call to encourage re-engagement in the course as soon as Part-time Assistant Professor determines a student isnot actively participating in the course.
  • As technologically supported by the platform, Part-time Assistant Professor will host noless than two one-hour synchronous office hour sessions per week.  Office hours will be posted in each course.
  • Part-time AssistantProfessor will provide quality feedback to students.  Quality feedback includes but is not limited to:
    •  substantive and reflect acontent focus
    •  impart knowledge, share resources and dialogue with students
    •  include track changes of edits to proper use ofmechanics
    •  include a summative statement at the beginning or end of document with key observations
    •  communicate in a mannerand with language reflecting support of the student

Scholarship

Part-time Assistant Professor isexpected to meet the University's requirements for scholarship as articulated in the Faculty Handbook. Part-time Assistant Professor isencouraged to apply for the various initiatives the University funds to promote research and scholarship. Part-time Assistant Professorwill:

  • Maintain a record of scholarly activities befitting a doctoral granting institution
  • Contribute to the body ofknowledge of their discipline

Compliance with University Policies 

Part-time Assistant Professors areexpected to know, acknowledge, and comply with University policies as stated in the Team Member Handbook and Faculty Handbook.

Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree in law from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experiencein legal doctrine and practice, as well as in teaching and presenting on legal matters
  • Ability to create substantive coursecontent
  • Experience with the online delivery of education and the systems that support it
  • Proficiency in the use oftechnology in the delivery of education
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Online teaching experience
  • Curriculum developmentexperience
  • Experience teaching in an accredited Juris Doctor program

  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook. Experience using Student Information System (SIS) such as SOAR/Peoplesoft systems.
  • Skill in operating equipment, such as personalcomputer, fax, copier, phone systems.
  • Ability to handle a diversity of details in order to make informed and responsive decisions onmatters that impact the Part-time Assistant Professors, and students.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals,professional journals, technical procedures, and governing body regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, andprocedure manuals.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability tointerpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concretevariables.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with the online delivery of education and the systemsthat support it
  • Willingness to participate in trial use of new technologies and integrate new technologies intoteaching.
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal and written.
  • Skill in using or eagerness to learn to use multipletechnologies to teach and communicate with students (learning management systems, Skype, etc.).
  • Demonstrated mastery of APAstyle.

Compensation Range:

Hourly: $34.03 - $43.35

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on acandidate's qualifications, skills, and competencies.  Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within thisrange for this position.
